Carbon CAB SPOILER

The Datsun 620 platform has one large issue, where there are no high mounted brake lights anywhere in the stock bed or cab body. These trucks routinely are ran into from behind since the stock brake lamps are near ground level and often not seen. Not wanting this to be my own fate while also adding some spice to the top profile of the cab, I designed this cab spoiler that flows from the original cab top line and duck bills a small amount off the back glass. The spoiler has a center divided section to add depth and break up the flat surface, which also houses a 3-way LED indicator system which is used for tails, brake and left-right turn indication. This lamp is extremely bright and highly visible, which adds a considerable amount of peace of mind and flare to the build.

The spoiler was entirely 3D printed in modular sections to use as a test fitting male pattern, later to be used as a the male plug for a mold after adding flanges. The plug was created and body worked to a high gloss before drafting a female fiberglass mold over top. The spoiler was then laid in carbon reinforcement and resin infused as a two piece mold system, creating two carbon sections to be bonded together on assembly.

The light element was a commercially bought 12V LED designed just for this purpose, but an acrylic housing was designed and machined to fit inside the spoiler and hold the LED sealed inside. The acrylic housing was also bead blasted lightly to help diffuse the light pattern to a larger array, while also back painting the lens black to blend in with the spoiler better.

Installed on the truck, the spoiler is an amazing addition and one of the most complimented parts of the build.
