With a lack of room in the engine bay thanks to the wide set 1UZFE V8, it was difficult to find an ideal path as to where to mount a large single or smaller twin turbos on the truck. Mini trucks are exactly that, and room is precious around every corner you see. After much consideration, the relatively unused bed of the truck was the most open real estate available for packing such a complicated system, while also offering so much freedom to do something truly unique. The bed mounted twin turbo system is certainly one of the most controversial parts of the entire project, but mini trucks being what they are mean that I can actually touch the turbos with one hand and the center of the motor with my other hand without the cab in place: not as far from one another as many think.

Due to the remote placement of the turbos from the motor, a considerable amount of time was spent choosing the size of the turbos, diameter of exhaust tubing and the diameter of the intercooler piping. Looking at maximum clean flow rates per cross sectional area of both intake and exhaust tubing, I was able to determine what size pipes matched best with their overall internal volume between the motor and turbos. The turbos themselves were sized carefully for their efficiency range VS the target boost and HP levels from the displacement of the motor that would be spinning them.

Quite a few variations of the overall twin turbo system were developed, eventually falling on the version seen below. Borg Warner EFR ball bearing turbos are dressed with Vibrant Performance stainless, titanium and billet HD wiggins clamps all around. Much of the tubing and fabricated components were made using 3D printed or laser cut steel jigs to build the system as close to the CAD data as possible. Once together, the entire system really does a great job of taking a boring space like the truck bed against the cab and making it a showcase area for the entire project.
