custom heat exchangers
Heat management in the front of the Datsun 620 was difficult due to the relatively small amount of room available for any heat exchanger stack up. The decision to go rear mounted twin turbo with a water to air intercooler added another level of complexity, as the heat exchanger for that system now also had to be placed in the front of the truck. Working with C&R Racing on this project and discussing air flow, HP projections for the intercooler system, and available bounding boxes, we were able to come up with a heat exchanger set to meet my needs.
Starting with one of their standard aluminum radiators, I designed my own fan shroud system to place the fans exactly where they needed to be in order to fit around the 1UZ front runner, complete with rubber air flappers to allow air to efficiently pass through the core and shroud at speed. We came up with a custom design for the intercooler heat exchanger, that specifically fit the needs for this truck. I designed and fabricated one off aluminum mounts to integrate the custom intercooler heat exchanger onto the radiator end tanks, using a mix of fabricated and welded aluminum with lathe turned aluminum bungs.
The heat exchanger stack was also designed to be isolated mounted on rubber mounts, with simple and clean mounting strategies to make the parts serviceable if needed.
